FAQs

What is the difference between facilitating and coaching?

Great question! As a Certified Daring Way Facilitator, I am trained and licensed to deliver i.e. facilitate, curriculum based on the work of Brené Brown. I facilitate this work with individuals and groups usually customizing the program based on what someone wants or loves about Brown’s work. As a Leadership Coach, I partner with people to examine how mindsets and beliefs influence our perspectives and ability to achieve our goals. Leadership Coaching focuses on the person, who we are because that is at the heart of what we want to accomplish or do.

What is the difference between coaching and consulting?

So very much. As a coach, I do not tell you what to do, give advice, or teach techniques that I believe work. That is consulting. Although if you ask for any of the above I will consult. A coach is an accountability and listening partner. A coach is fully present to what you say, how you are, and what you choose to share. I ask questions. Questions that prompt new ways of seeing a situation. We focus on who you are and who you want to be.

Well, what’s the difference between coaching and therapy?

Ahhh, right. Coaching focuses on the present. Where are you now and where do you want to go. It is often goal-specific, as in I want to develop a quality in myself that I see in others. Or, I’m in a new role or relationship and I want to do things differently this time. Therapy, in my experience, creates and invites the space to examine what healing we may need from our past. I believe that coaching coupled with therapy is an ideal way to practice wholehearted self-examination towards self-actualization.

So why are you a priest and does that have anything to do with your other work?

Here is where I share more about why I became an ordained priest. Just like you, I bring all of who I am to what I do. If talking about faith, spirituality, and religion matters to you, then I’m happy to talk about it. If not that’s fine too. And please, don’t be surprised if I drop an f-bomb or the like occasionally. Some of us priests do that too.

What is The Daring Way™?

It’s a curriculum and organization that Brené Brown developed based on years of studying vulnerability, shame, courage. I first heard her interviewed here and the way she spoke about vulnerability and shame really resonated with my theological understanding of the life of Jesus and what he wanted us to know about God (that we’re loved entirely for who we are, no matter what!). In 2015 an Episcopal bishop invited clergy to the Diocese of Texas to learn how to facilitate Brown’s work. Sign me up! And I did in 2015. I’ve loved bringing this work into people’s lives ever since.

Ok, could you tell me a little bit more about being a Leadership Coach?

Yes! I came to coaching through my work as a facilitator. I used to think coaching and facilitating was the same. That a coach told people what framework or techniques to use to meet their goals. Nope. Leadership coaching focuses on the person, not the problem. The problem probably brings us to coaching, but as I learned at Georgetown’s Institute of Transformational Leadership it’s the person that matters. I am completing my ACC credential through International Coaching Federation (ICF) which has more info, here.

Hmmm. How do I know if any of this is for me?

Well, read through some of my posts. Do they resonate? Is there something about coaching, or taking a  Daring Way™ class, that piques your interest? Then email me and let’s see. You can also check out my Events page to find the classes I have facilitated or will be leading.

How much does coaching or facilitating cost?

That depends. Sometimes coaching or facilitating is scheduled directly with one person, sometimes a church or non-profit, sometimes a company. Different rates for different people, organizations, and the scope of the project. If you email me, I can get more specific.

Do you have a mailing list?

I do! Thanks for asking. You can sign-up for it here. And I promise I will not spam you or share your email with anyone else. I try to send it out once a month with posts and classes, but sometimes, that’s a goal I do not keep. I also write on Medium if that’s a site you enjoy.
